Not every vacation needs a long itinerary or a packed schedule. Sometimes the best getaway is a few days away from everyday responsibilities, with the ocean outside your window and the freedom to do as much—or as little—as you please.
That was exactly the idea behind our four-day Mother’s Day cruise aboard Margaritaville at Sea Paradise. We chose it as a short, relaxing break, with visits to Freeport and Nassau in the Bahamas and plenty of time to enjoy the ship.
We flew Delta to Florida the day before embarkation. With years of travel-industry experience behind me, this is one recommendation I make again and again: arrive in your departure city at least a day before sailing.
Flight delays, weather, and unexpected cancellations can quickly turn a relaxing vacation into a stressful race to the port. Giving yourself a buffer makes it much easier to begin your cruise feeling ready to enjoy it.
The Bon Voyant Tip: Plan to arrive the day before your cruise, especially if you must fly to the port city. Think of that extra night as part of your vacation, not an inconvenience.
We booked an oceanview stateroom, and it was a wonderful choice. Being able to look out at the water made our cabin feel like a small retreat of its own. For a trip centered on relaxation, that connection to the sea was part of the pleasure.
Our cabin attendant was exceptional—attentive to our needs and responsible for the delightful towel animals that appeared in our room. Those thoughtful details, along with genuinely good service, are the kinds of things I remember long after a cruise ends.

We enjoyed spending time on deck and at the pool, and the ship offered a variety of activities and entertainment for those who wanted to keep busy. For us, the best part was having no pressure to do everything.
Dining was another pleasure. With different restaurants and options aboard, we could find something that appealed to us. And, as you can see, we certainly enjoyed a sweet treat or two.

Our itinerary included both Freeport and Nassau. In Nassau, we enjoyed a swim-with-dolphins excursion. In Freeport, we chose a ziplining and beach experience at Pirates Cove. Those excursions gave us a touch of adventure without taking away from the relaxed pace of the trip.
One of the pleasures of cruising is seeing a destination from the water as the ship arrives or departs. The harbor views were a memorable part of our time in the Bahamas.

For us, absolutely. A four-day cruise can be a lovely way to celebrate an occasion, enjoy time together, or simply take a break. You don’t need a week away to return with good memories.
It helps to choose the right expectations. A shorter cruise is not about seeing everything. It is about enjoying the time you have—whether that means an excursion, a leisurely meal, or an afternoon doing nothing by the pool.
The Bon Voyant Tip: Choose a cruise that fits the kind of getaway you actually want. If your goal is rest, leave room in the schedule for it.
What I remember most about this Mother’s Day getaway isn’t a checklist of activities. It’s the pleasure of slowing down, the comfort of our oceanview cabin, the attentive service, the fun of our Bahamian excursions, and the feeling of having a few days just to enjoy ourselves.
Sometimes, a short escape is exactly what you need.
